Carmel's story is one of artistic vision and deliberate community design. Founded in 1771 when Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo was relocated to the valley by Father Junípero Serra, the area remained largely rural until 1888 when entrepreneur Santiago Duckworth began developing it as a summer colony. By 1902, the Carmel Development Company began recruiting artists, offering affordable lots to "brain workers at indoor employment." The strategy worked—following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, hundreds of artists, writers, and musicians flocked to Carmel, establishing it as an art colony.

Today, Carmel-by-the-Sea is a village of precisely 3,220 residents—small enough to feel intimate, large enough to support extraordinary cultural programming and world-class dining. The architecture is deliberately whimsical: storybook cottages, fairytale homes with rounded corners, stained-glass windows, and tiled roofs create an Old-World European aesthetic unique to America. The absence of street numbers, traffic lights, and street lights preserves the village character that residents fiercely protect.
